Director of Bands


Johnathan A. Ancell is currently in his 7th year teaching as the Director of Bands at Grayson High School. He also serves as the Georgia Music Educators Association District 13 Treasurer.

Before being named the newly appointed at Grayson High School, Mr. Ancell served as Director of Bands at Shiloh Middle School for 5 years. Under his director, the band grew from 190 members to its largest enrollment of 310 members, grades 6-8. For the 2018-2019 & 2019-2020 school year, he was runner-up for Teacher of the Year. Along with his responsibilities at Shiloh Middle, Mr. Ancell served on the marching band staff at Duluth High School and Chattahoochee High School.

During the 2014 and 2015 DCA Season, Mr. Ancell served as one of the drum majors for the Alliance Drum and Bugle Corps. He also has performed with Tara Winds Community Band, Georgia Wind Symphony, and, currently, Atlanta Wind Symphony.

Mr. Ancell received his Bachelors of Music degree from Georgia Southern University in 2015 and his Masters of Education degree from Columbus State University in 2019. In Summer of 2021, he will begin working on his Education Specialist degree from Kennesaw State University. At Georgia Southern University, he studied percussion with Dr. Matthew D. Fallin and conducting with Dr. Robert Dunham and Dr. Colin R. McKenzie.
